Description
The PTC Creo Parametric is a robust modelling tool that focuses on providing modularity and instant feedback for design changes. The Creo family of design programs, combine parametric and direct modeling techniques. Its surfacing capabilities allow users to turn 2D sketches into full 3D models by either parametrically building or organically shaping complex surfaces. It also supports 2D drafting in addition to its 3D modelling capabilities, meaning that a designer can easily switch between the 3D model and its corresponding 2D draft, with either view reflecting changes made on the other.
Features
The complex Creo software suite from PTC focuses on interconnecting the modelling and prototyping phases of product development. It involves 10 applications as follows: Creo Parametric, Creo Direct, Creo Simulate, Creo Illustrate, Creo Schematics, Creo View MCAD, Creo View ECAD, Creo Sketch, Creo Layout and Creo Options Modeler. Included are tools for concept and industrial design, simulation and analysis, and general production readiness along with breakthrough capabilities in additive manufacturing, model-based definition, generative design, augmented reality, and smart connected design. It links these often-separated processes by providing fully featured tools as add-ons for its flagship software. Due to its parametric nature, the CAD/CAM system is especially popular in high tech industries like aviation and aerospace. It is widely spread in the manufacturing sector but also in medicine as well preparing various custom devices, prothesis or implants.
The simulation module of the software is a complete structural, thermal and vibration analysis solution with a comprehensive set of finite elements analysis (FEA) capabilities that allow to analyze and validate the performance of 3D virtual prototypes before the first part is made. While Creo Simulate is used to model the structural integrity of a product under various conditions, Creo’s Mechanism capability is meant for testing the actual mechanics of a product during operation. This makes Mechanism the go-to software for testing movements of a design, adjusting clearances, and fully visualizing the effect of macroscopic displacements on the design.
Advances in Additive and Subtractive Manufacturing: Creo 9 delivers improved control over stochastic and formula-based lattices and user-defined support structures for advanced additive manufacturing use cases. Continued improvements to subtractive manufacturing focus on 5-axis finishing toolpaths, turning, mould design, and adaptive feed rates for milling.
Applications in Healtcare
The software is widely used in healthcare application over the world. It supports e.g., augmented reality as the tool that brings medical students on-demand “just in time” information and usher in a new way of learning. A student can safely operate on a virtual human with digitized anatomy information presented in context and simulate actions withing the environment.
Ergonomic Design and Vision: Expanded ergonomic tools help designers recognise the uniqueness of users while helping ensure products comply with health safety, and workplace standards. Using the new Vision Field Analysis capability, engineers can analyse users’ line of sight and field of view when driving or using equipment.
The researchers at the University of Tokyo began prototyping and testing a series of innovative mechanical models based on a hydrodynamic levitating impeller pump using PTC Creo as their design software. Lubricated by the patient’s blood, the design ensures moving parts never touch. The result is a total artificial heart that operates with remarkable efficacy and durability.
